The driver slammed on the brakes and glowered at Mary, then stuck his head out the window. “What are you yelling about, lady? What dog?” He looked back at the rear tires and saw a tail. With a grunt, he heaved open his door and dropped heavily to the pavement.

She wrung her hands together, anxiety welled inside of her. She should have paid more attention to her surroundings. She steeled herself, before she said, "I'm sorry."

The driver didn't respond at first, not a word.

1b. Or like this?
