Me and my sister are by no means professionals but we had this idear to train our writing and get to understand our characters better. So I thought I'd share it here.

I called it "The game of situations" and here is how it works:

First you'll need a list like the one bellow and a dice or random number generator. You can create your own list but this it the one I came up with.

You first decide on the number of characters you want to work with by either random or chooseing (you can be very flexible and decide at the end.)

Next you roll the dice or RNG and see what number you get. Check for the responding entry in your list and roll a second time. Now you have two numbers that give you a certian situation for your characters to be in and react to.

Lastly you write a short story about what your characters would do.

I made two versions of the list here are both of them:

Version 1:

1 – Explaining something complicated

2 – Comedy

3 – Protecting someone important

4 – Getting ready for an important mission/having to participate in a weird ritual

5 – The night before a big day

6 – Training with a good friend/partner

1:

1,2 – the person understands it

3,4 – the person does not understand it

5,6 – in front of a class

2:

1,2 – someone is being stupid

3,4 – something embarrassing

5,6 – messing with someone

3:

1,2 – from a monster

3,4 – from another person

5,6 – from a group of people or monsters

3,4 – in bed

5,6 – practicing in during the night

6:

1,2 – Friendly sparring match

3,4 – someone teaching the other/s something

5,6 – playing a game as practice

Version 2:

1 – Stealing something

2 – Investigating something

3 – Someone’s drunk

4 – Dancing

5 – walking around at night

6 – Shopping

1:

1,2 – Pickpocketing

3,4 – Stealing from a villain

5,6 – A big heist

2:

1,2 – A murder

3,4 – A break in

5,6 – A missing person/object case

3:

1,2 – One person is drunk

3,4 – Everyone but one person is drunk

5,6 – Half of everyone is drunk

1,2 – At a party

3,4 – At a ball

1,2 – Sneaking somewhere

3,4 – enjoying the night

5,6 – Unable to sleep

3,4 – for equipment

You can of course make your own list that is more suitable to your characters/world. Feel free to share your stories or give soe feetback. Also ask questions if you dont understand something.

With that said have fun.
