This is my opinion on writing, arrived at carefully, through countless hours of trying to avoid writing.

I’ve come to believe that writing is an act of discipline and NOT an act of creativity. In fact, the best writers are not as unique as we like to believe. There is an order of magnitude greater number of writers than we think. Weall share the same creative spark instinctively. The only thing different between us and truly good writers is that they have sharpened their tools while the rest of us swing rocks tied to the end of sticks.

Writing is an exercise of the mind, and it needs to be done regularly. You need to do it even when you don't want to do it. It is a muscle that needs to be exercised. It needs to be stretched and it needs to be built up.

Good writers have thickened their muscles. This is good news and bad news for the rest of us. The good news is that there’s no reason we can’t do the same fattening of out creative mind. The bad news is that the same goes for everyone else. The bad news is that we’re deceiving ourselves when we think that writing a story is a unique talent.

The really good news is that almost everyone else won’t do the heavy lifting needed to get there. Which is how we can set ourselves apart.
