I’m going to do my best to explain the situation without giving away too many details at the same time. Only because it’s often suggested you should write the first draft with the door closed, meaning entirely private, lest you make yourself susceptible to overconfidence or a lack thereof.

Anyway, I feel the end of the book approaching. I know I’m close, but I also think it’s going to be an either weak/empty ending. I’m in a situation where the two main characters are pretty much facing death, and I really don’t see any way around it. Well, one would die, and the other would be stranded alone forever basically. Personally, I don’t think it’s a terrible ending. The flow of the story naturally led them here and I don’t see anything wrong with that. But for some reason when I picture someone else reading the last sentence of my book, closing the cover, and leaning back…I can almost hear their groan of dissatisfaction.

How do you guys feel about an ending like this? Have you read anything in which both the main characters die? Maybe a type of epilogue would help?
