I have a really great idea (in my opinion) for a book/short story in my head, but I don’t know where to start.

I’m nearly 30, I’ve never really been good with grammar or story writing, so I don’t really know where to start. I love reading and one day this idea struck me and I can’t get it out of my brain.

I know I should write an outline, and most suggestions will be to just start writing, but is there anything else I need to know or I should do? Any helpful books or places I should look to help me out?

I want this to be good, even if I never do anything with it, I want it to seem like it was at least written by someone competent with dialogue and grammar. I know I won’t become a professional overnight or be able to make up for the years of training that people who studied this stuff are able to do, but I want it to be something I can feel proud of. One of my suggestions is to go the “Catcher in the Rye” route where it’s written in the first person and so any grammar issues are on the narrator. But any other advice or places I should look to write dialogue or anything else I can do to get this started would be fantastic!

Thank you!
