Hey guys, I love reading and read everything I can get my hands on. For the past couple of years I have wanted to write. Specifically fantasy because that is the genre that got me into reading. I started out writing but nothing I wrote sounded good to me. I was given the suggestion of writing short fiction but I tried that and it didn't really fit with what I wanted to write. I wrote a couple of shorts and they just didn't seem all that good. I love books like Game of Thrones, Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive and Brent Week's the Black Prism. Large books full of detail, multiple POV characters and cool magic systems. Don't get me wrong I really like the Lord of the Rings too. But I want to write those massive fantasy books that have three maps, an appendix about the world etc. I just don't know where to start. I know getting to their writing level takes time and effort but the books that I do start to write I never finish because I get five or six chapters in, find a plot problem and stop. Or I am writing and I think of another good idea or possible book idea and have to write that down. Its really frustrating not finishing what I am starting. Another issue I seem to have is my world building. I either get engrossed to much into my world building and never write or my world building sucks and is way to generic and bland. I have thought about outlining what I write but I don't really like the idea of an outline. I baulk at the idea, possibly due to me being in college and writing outlines for my papers. I guess my problem is I just don't know where to start. How much time do I a lot to developing the world, or my characters or the plot. How do I develop a plot that isn't being copied off of something else. How do I outline, how much do I outline. I know its different for everyone but I have these ideas in my head that I want to write down and don't really know where to start. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!
