I've seen both sides of the argument and have been on both ends when it comes to trying each. Currently, I am on the side of an outline and I feel like the benefits of an outline is just too helpful to ignore.

But this isn't about what I personally like, I am posting this to start a discussion about what the writers of Reddit have to say about Outlines for a story.

Do you use an outline for writing and if so why? If you don't, why don't you?

The point of an outline is to help give direction for your story, and allow you to have even breaks (for chapters) as well as letting you spot plot errors, etc. There will never be a point where you aren't sure what to do while writing if you have a good outline because you already have the map.

I know some people feel like an outline puts bars on the writing and I used to feel like it "took away the freedom in writing". I am interested in seeing what others have to say how they feel about Outlines and how it works for them or how it doesn't.

Some things won't work for others, so if you don't use one, I still want to hear that side of the story.
