I'm writing about a boy and his mission to return to his parents in an cruel, brutal universe. During the first two chapters, I write about his relationship with his parents and his sister so I can show their connection to the reader. That way, it hits harder when my main character ends up being separated from his parents.

But what I'm having trouble figuring out is the pacing, how long should I keep my main character with my parents? How much more should I expose my readers to their relationship and peaceful life before I turn it upside down?

Because I'm planning to have the "big event" happen in chapter two and have them finally be separated the day after the boy and his father have their last intimate moment together. I didn't really write too much about the mother though. Is chapter two jumping the gun? Do you think I could fill in the details about their relationship later on through my main character's memories/thought process?
